how to get to galapagos

How to get to Galapagos: you fly from Quito or Guayaquil to Baltra or San Cristóbal, pay the park fees on arrival, and move between islands by ferry or small plane. Here is each step, with costs.

Getting to Galapagos

  • Fly from Ecuador mainland only (Quito or Guayaquil)
  • Main airports: Baltra (Seymour) or San Cristóbal
  • Flight time: 3-4 hours from Ecuador coast
  • Cost: $300-$600 per person each way
  • Book flights 2-3 months in advance for best prices

Getting to Ecuador First: International Entry Points

You’re not flying direct to the Galapagos from your home country. You’re flying to Ecuador, then flying to the islands from there. These are your entry points to Ecuador:

Mariscal Sucre Airport (UIO – Quito): Ecuador’s main international hub. Most international flights land here. It’s at 2,850m elevation, so you might want to spend a night in Quito to acclimate before flying to the islands.

José Joaquín de Olmedo Airport (GYE – Guayaquil): Coastal city, fewer international flights, but sometimes cheaper connections. Lower elevation, easier to adapt to before flying. It’s 5 hours by car from Quito.

Reality check: Most travelers land in Quito because that’s where the good international connections are. If you’ve got time, Quito’s worth exploring before heading to the islands. If you’re rushing, Guayaquil works fine—it’s just less tourist infrastructure. To see both, our Ecuador and Galápagos tours plan the mainland and the islands as one trip of 9, 12 or 14 days.

Inter-Island Flights: Getting From Ecuador to Galapagos

Now you’re in Ecuador. Here’s where it gets specific.

The Two Main Galapagos Airports

You’re landing at one of two places:

Baltra (Seymour): This is where most cruises start. It’s located on the north side of the archipelago. Upon arrival, you’ll be bused to the Itabaca Channel, then ferried to Santa Cruz (30 minutes). It’s the logistics center for cruise tourism.

San Cristóbal: The second airport, more touristy than it used to be. Direct entry without needing a ferry. If you’re doing land-based tourism (staying on one island), this is sometimes better. Some cruises originate here too. Not sure how to fit this into a trip? Tell us your dates and we will map it out.

My recommendation? If you’re doing a cruise, Baltra doesn’t matter—your cruise handles logistics. If you’re doing land-based, San Cristóbal is simpler because you skip the ferry to Santa Cruz. You land and you’re immediately on an island.

Flight Booking Strategy: When & How

Here’s where most people go wrong:

Book 2-3 months in advance. These flights fill up. During peak season (June-August), if you’re booking 2 weeks out, you might find limited options. During shoulder seasons (November, May), you can book closer. But don’t wait.

Book on airline websites, not third-party sites. Galápagos flights have specific restrictions and luggage limits that third-party sites often don’t handle correctly. Go directly to TAME, Avianca, or LATAM.

Luggage limits are real: Most flights have a 20kg (44lb) limit. That’s your carry-on PLUS checked bag combined. Oversized luggage costs $50+ per kilogram. Pack light.

Layover strategy: Some flights from Quito require a stop in Guayaquil. Some don’t. Check your routing. Extra stops add hours to your travel day, but cheaper fares sometimes justify it.

Costs Breakdown: Actually Planning Your Budget

Let me give you real numbers for flights from your home country to Galapagos:

  • US/Canada flights: $600-$1,200 to Ecuador, $400-$600 Quito-Galapagos = $1,000-$1,800 total
  • Europe flights: $700-$1,400 to Ecuador, $400-$600 Quito-Galapagos = $1,100-$2,000 total
  • South American flights: $300-$700 to Ecuador, $350-$550 Quito-Galapagos = $650-$1,250 total

These are approximate. Prices spike during peak season and drop during shoulder/low seasons. Book early and you’ll be at the lower end. Book last-minute during peak season and you’re at the higher end or sold out.

Visa Requirements for Ecuador & Galapagos

Most nationalities get a 90-day tourist visa upon entering Ecuador at no cost. This applies to US, Canadian, EU, Australian, and most other passport holders. Check the Ecuadorian embassy for your specific country.

The Galapagos entry fee is $20 USD (paid upon arrival at the airport). That’s separate from the visa—not part of your flight cost. Have it ready in cash (or card if you trust the ATM).

The Baltra-Santa Cruz Ferry Logistics

If you land at Baltra, here’s the process:

  1. Land at Baltra airport
  2. Exit plane, immigration inspection right there
  3. Pay $20 entry fee
  4. Collect luggage
  5. Board shuttle bus to Itabaca Channel (5 min drive)
  6. Board ferry across channel (about 5 minutes)
  7. Arrive at Santa Cruz
  8. If cruise, your cruise company handles pickup. If land-based, arrange hotel pickup

Total time from landing to Santa Cruz: about 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Flight Timing & Connections

Here’s what I recommend for booking your flights:

Avoid overnight connections: If you need a connection in Ecuador, book a same-day connection rather than staying overnight. You’ll waste a day in a hotel, and it complicates logistics. Aim for morning Quito arrival, afternoon Galapagos flight.

Build in buffer time: Flying from US to Quito (might take 8-12 hours with connections), then same day to Galapagos is rough. Consider arriving in Ecuador the day before your Galapagos flight. Gives you time to rest, eat, and adjust to a new time zone.

Return flight timing: Don’t book your return Galapagos-Ecuador flight on the same day as your Ecuador-international flight if you can avoid it. Missed connections happen. Give yourself flexibility.

Luggage & Packing for Getting to Galapagos

This matters because these flights are strict:

Pro tip: Wear your heaviest clothes on flight day to save luggage space

Carry-on: Usually 1 bag, 10kg limit

Checked luggage: Usually 1 bag, 10kg limit (total 20kg combined)

Excess charge: $50+ per kg over limit

Restricted items: Standard flight restrictions (no lighters, sharp objects, etc)

Travel Insurance: Non-Negotiable

Get it before you fly. These islands are remote. Medical evacuation from Galapagos can cost $10,000-$50,000. Travel insurance with evacuation coverage runs $200-$400 for a week. Do the math

Can I fly direct from the US to Galapagos?

No. All international travelers must enter Ecuador first (Quito or Guayaquil), then take a domestic flight to Galapagos. There’s no direct international service to the islands.

Which airport should I fly into—Baltra or San Cristóbal?

For cruises, it doesn’t matter—your cruise picks you up either way. For land-based tourism, San Cristóbal is slightly better because you avoid the ferry from Baltra. Cost difference is usually minimal.

How early should I arrive for my Galapagos flight?

Be there 2 hours early. These are smaller planes, check-in moves fast, but security can have lines. Don’t miss this flight—there might not be another one until tomorrow.

Is it cheaper to book my Ecuador-Galapagos flight separately?

Not necessarily. Some packages include the inter-island flight. Some don’t. Compare before booking. Sometimes booking through a tour operator includes flights cheaper than booking separately.

What happens if I miss my flight to Galapagos?

Rebooking costs money. These flights fill up. You might not get a seat for several days. Show up early, don’t miss this flight. Travel insurance might cover rebooking if it’s a legitimate missed connection due to previous flight delay.
