Ecuador 10 Day Itinerary: The Ultimate Guide to Highlands, Amazon & Coast

This Ecuador 10 day itinerary covers Quito, the volcanoes of the Andes, the Amazon and the coast, with realistic travel times between each stop, written by local guides in Quito.
Ten days hits four regions: Quito (2 days), Amazon (3 days), coast or Amazon (2-3 days), return travel (1-2 days). Start in Quito, branch to the Amazon via Coca or Misahuallí, come back to the coast for beach time. You’ll feel slightly rushed but you’ll experience Ecuador’s diversity. Skip Galápagos on a 10-day trip—it requires 3-5 days and expensive flights. Budget $600-1200 for accommodation, food, and transport plus $300-600 for tours. Two weeks is better if possible, but 10 days works great. For the coast leg, pick the beach town with our guide to Ecuador beaches.
Ecuador 10 Day Itinerary: Highlands, Amazon & Coast
I’ve led hundreds of 10-day Ecuador trips, and I can tell you exactly where the tension lies: people want to see everything, but 10 days isn’t infinite. They come wanting Quito and the Amazon and the coast and Galápagos and Cuenca and cloud forests. I get it. Ecuador’s compact and diverse, so FOMO is real. But the best trips aren’t about checking boxes; they’re about experiencing places deeply enough that they stick with you. Our full guide to Cuenca Ecuador covers the 14 things worth your time there, where to stay and how to get down from Quito. Not sure how to fit this into a trip? Tell us your dates and we will map it out.
Here’s what I’ve learned: ten days is enough. Not for everything, but for a genuine Ecuador experience. You can hit the highlands, jungle, and coast. You’ll feel slightly rushed, but you won’t feel cheated. The itinerary I’m laying out here is based on dozens of trips—it’s what actually works logistically, what people genuinely enjoy, and what creates lasting memories.
Days 4-5: Amazon Lodge Experience (3-Day Tour)
Most Amazon tours are 3 days/2 nights. You’re staying at a lodge, eating included meals, doing guided nature walks, paddling canoes, seeing animals (pink river dolphins, sloths, birds, caimans, pink frogs, anacondas if you’re lucky), learning about jungle medicine, and adjusting to the humidity.
Expect: wet, buggy, hot, incredible. Early morning walks are best for wildlife. Afternoons get hot and quiet. Night canoe rides are magical—spotlight the shore and see animals. Your guides are locals who live this life.
Internet and communication: don’t expect cell service. Many lodges have spotty WiFi. This is a feature, not a bug. Disconnect a bit.
Day 6: Return from Amazon, Head to Coast
Your three-day Amazon tour ends morning of Day 6. You fly back to Quito (Coca to Quito flight). From Quito airport, catch an evening bus or next-day flight to the coast (Montañita, Puerto Lópe{, or Salinas). If flying, evening bus from Quito central station works (8-10 hours overnight, arrives morning). You’ll be tired and slightly gross from jungle humidity. The overnight bus isn’t luxurious but it gets you there while saving a night’s accommodation.

Day 7: Coastal Arrival, Beach Time
Arrive coast morning of Day 7. Find your beach town, get accommodation, shower (you’ll want to), and relax. Montañita is party-central backpacker vibe. Puerto López is sleepy fishing village. Salinas is upscale beach resort. Choose vibe first, then activities.

10-Day Ecuador Itinerary FAQ
Is 10 days enough for Ecuador?
Yes, absolutely. Ten days is enough to experience highlands, Amazon, and coast. You won’t see everything (Galápagos needs its own flight; our Ecuador and Galápagos tours add the islands in 9, 12 or 14 days), but you’ll see what makes Ecuador special—biodiversity, indigenous culture, colonial architecture, jungle wildlife, and Pacific beaches. Expect to feel slightly rushed in logistics but genuinely satisfied with experience.
